T&M U.K. SUBS NEWSFEED 2021...

11/12: R.I.P. MENSI

The whole punk community has been saddened by the recent news of the devastating passing of Mensi from the Angelic Upstarts, taken, way too early by Covid.

U.K. Subs guitarist STEVE STRAUGHAN, who played alongside Mensi in the Angelic Upstarts from 2013 to 2015, just prior to joining the Subs in 2016, has penned the following heartfelt tribute on behalf of the Subs…

Two Million Voices - A Tribute to Mensi

That song.

It was like having military tanks with their engines roaring all around us on stage. The power of that long drum roll intro, followed by the guitars etc, was out of this world. It really was a wall of sound. Then Mensi shouts out "Two million voices…" The crowd went mental. You couldn't ask for any other opening track to start off a punk rock gig. From that moment the atmosphere was set, it was electric. Mensi was, without a doubt, the singer and songwriter of one of the most powerful, important and influential punk bands of all time.

I remember passing my Upstarts audition and him saying to me, "you know what's better than a Gibson Les Paul?" I said "I don't know." His reply was "Two Les Pauls", as both me and Neil used Gibson Les Pauls.

"Alreet son", he would say to each of us as we got out of his red and white Sunderland FC coloured van on arrival at a gig. Whenever Newcastle were beaten while we were out on tour, Mensi would take great delight in taking a photo of the Geordie half of the band in the red and white tour van. He would then post it on Facebook. Not being into football I still found it quite funny, just harmless footy banter.

Thanks Mensi for those outstanding anthems like Police Oppression, The Murder of Liddle Towers, Last Night Another Soldier, and many, many more.

I still remember when we were playing a gig in Middlesbrough and Mensi received the terrible news that one of his parents had sadly passed away. He still somehow found the strength to play the show because he didn't want to let the fans down. That must have taken some doing. What made that gig even more emotional for him was when a girl at the same gig said to us that she was the daughter of Liddle Towers. A few months later she joined us on stage in Sunderland while we performed that amazing song.

I still remember my first gig as an Upstart in Grimsby. I just managed to get through the set without a hitch. The crowd wanted more. I panicked as I didn't know any more songs. Mensi said "We're doing Delilah." I said, "I don't know it so I best sit out of this one." Mensi countered that "the rest of the band know it, so just get up there and mime to it." I did just that and I don't think anyone noticed!

It was Mensi who I can thank for me playing my first American tour. One of the gigs was at Punk Rock Bowling in Vegas. It was quite something playing that gig. The Upstarts always had the advantage at any gig because they were armed to the teeth with such anthemic songs.

Some of my fondest memories are chatting to Mensi about the old days of the Upstarts playing. They truly were one of the most notorious and talked about bands. Many people will know that the police tried on numerous occasions to ban their gigs in the north east in the early days. Another one of the stories I was most interested in was when the Upstarts shared the stage with Steve Jones and Cooky with the Professionals in the USA. I just loved hearing them all.

Thanks for the good times, Mensi.

Yesterday I received a phone call while in soundcheck that Mensi had died.

My first thoughts were for his lovely kids who he loved so much.

Yesterday afternoon I passed on the sad news to Charlie Harper. He was deeply saddened as was Alvin. Charlie told me that they became friends and started playing together around 1979.

Charlie thought the world of Mensi. In his own words he said "We were a band of brothers."

29/11: EUROPEAN TOUR CANCELLATION...

It is with great sadness that the U.K. Subs have to announce that they have been informed by their European Tour Booking Agency, Muttis Booking, that they have had to postpone the forthcoming scheduled 21 date tour of the Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland that was to run from 14 January 2022 to 6 February 2022.

This is an unfortunate decision that Muttis have not taken lightly, but due to the current ongoing Coronavirus pandemic across Europe, there came a point where the health and safety of all of their touring bands, the Subs included, had to take priority as the main concern of all those involved with their fabulous shows which they organise and promote.

A huge amount of work has already gone into both organising, as well as now re-arranging these dates, so with this decision to postpone the tour to January and February 2023 please be aware that a few gig venues could be changed, but all will hopefully fall back into place over the next year…

Please contact your ticket vendor if you require a refund or for confirmation of a re-arranged date, where your ticket will remain valid.

The Subs would like to thank all those at Muttis who are working incredibly hard, under an intense amount of pressure and disappointment behind the scenes to ensure the future of live music across Europe…

'Spitting & Screaming: The Story of The London Pub Rock Scene & 70s British Punk' is rather a grand title. Does it over promise? 18/05: TOP ALVIN 7" REVIEW ON NUZZ PROWLING WOLF

“...what a trio of tunes they are...”

You get the digital files straight away - vinyl ships late August...

Review by Nuzz:

ALVIN GIBBS & THE DISOBEDIENT SERVANTS - State Of Grace 7" Single (*A REVIEW*)
Following swiftly on from last years History EP comes this new single from Alvin and his Disobedient Servants (Leigh from Ruts DC and Jamie from UK Subs) only three tracks this time, but what a trio of tunes they are. 'State Of Grace' is a hey, hey.... hearty feast of majestic and maurauding Rock'n'Roll, while 'Too Bad She's In Love' is a dark and dirty solid and heavy head banging riff laden beast of a song. 'Brother Sister' is all punchy guitars, throbbing bass thumping and toe tapping drums. Great, great stuff!
Released as a limited edition of 300 7" vinyl copies (with Download code) Artwork is once again by Gaye Black. I believe there are delays at the pressing plant which means physical single wont get here till August, but the download is available now. See Time and Matter Recordings on Bancamp for details.

17/05: RPM ONLINE FULL OF PRAISE FOR OUR TWO T&M 7" SINGLES

The excellent RPM Online music site has given two massive thumbs up for both of our new Time & Matter Records' 7" singles from Charlie and Alvin in their monthly singles club round up of new releases...

On ALVIN GIBBS & THE DISOBEDIENT SERVANTS:

"...more evidence of (Alvin's) superb songwriting abilities...

...the title track leans on Gibbs previous employment with Iggy... Cool verses and toe-tapping chorus its a top tune...
‘Too Bad She’s In Love’ has got some real grit going on as we steam towards the chorus. Great chorus and one I want to play over and over a real earworm of a song. I love the way Heggerty's guitar wraps itself around Gibbs vocal as it heads to the chorus. Closing off this most excellent single is ‘Brother, Sister’ a jarring jabber of a rhythm offering something different to the other two tunes proving once again that there is some fantastic music being created out there – Buy it!"

On CHARLIE HARPER & THE SUB MACHINE:

"‘Panic’ begins with a piano intro but don’t let that fool you as the snare hits it takes off...
The track's ebb and flow is excellent as the heaviness of the verses pounds it does drop with a marching rhythm and Harper's Reverb laden vocal its engaging and intense and rather bloody good.
‘Post War Punks’ is perhaps more Subs like with its solid riff and Harper’s delivery is on point even if it did make me hungry whilst listening to its sandwich order list. Hurry whilst it’s still available..."

We're sad to report that this year's Rebellion Punk Music Festival in Blackpool, re-arranged from 2020 has now had to be cancelled, have a read about it all on the below link, it fully explains the difficult decision that the organisers had to make...

23/04: NEW ALBUM COMPLETED

The Subs' brand new 'studio' album has been finished, recorded 'remotely' over the past few months and scheduled for release later this year on the USA based label Cleopatra Records, Jamie put the following post on his Facebook page:

Good news everyone!

We've officially finished recording the new U.K. Subs album, I've finally just sent off the project files to be mixed. This calls for a celebratory cup of tea methinks 🙂 So happy to be done!!!

Jamie

Subs guitarist Steve Straughan also published the news on Facebook on as follows:

"Well! We've been sitting on this secret for a long time now. I was just waiting for the troops to give me the go-ahead to share the great news. Now I can, I'm gonna shout it from the rooftops. We are finished recording the new UK Subs album "Reverse Engineering" and it is now being mixed in the studio by none other than Pat Collier, original bass player of the Vibrators. Just like the other recordings I've done with the Subs, we all get an equal bite of the apple which is great, by which I mean we all write songs for that particular release. This time being an album, and my first album of originals, we have all written 3 songs each. All the songs were recorded in our own homes on our laptops and iPads etc. We then sent all the files to Jamie, our technical wizard, who then buffed and beefed up the sound quality and formatted everything into an audible system for Pat. So a massive thanks to Jamie for that and making it possible for us to record and get our songs collectively to a higher studio sound quality. As you will know I joined the band just as the last album was being released, so I never thought I would get the great opportunity to be on a UK Subs album. Thanks to Cleopatra Records this is now happening. Can't wait till it's out and available for you Subs fans to purchase and get your mitts on."

As did Alvin Gibbs, who wrote:

“OK, you may have already caught this news on this UK Subs' official Facebook page, or maybe our fan club page, but just in case you missed it, hear the noise one more time: I'm very pleased and excited to inform you all that the new forthcoming UK Subs' album 'Reverse Engineering' has now been recorded and is in its final stages of being mixed by our longtime studio collaborator, ex-Vibrators bassist Pat Collier, in London. The recording itself was achieved by remote home recording technology with the technical genius that is Jamie Oliver overseeing the engineering and putting together the separate files for each song. A big thank you goes out to Jamie from the rest of the band for his immense technical input, without which we could never have achieved these excellent recordings... won't call you a twat for at least a month mate! Charlie, being the righteously old-school Punk warrior he is, was the only one of us who actually made it into a recording studio, and his voice is better than ever on these tracks. There's 12 songs in total (3 composed by each member) and quite honestly they are so good and the album is sounding so great that it's my opinion this album will be considered up there in the fan's favourite stakes with Another Kind of Blues, Endangered Species, Ziezo, or any other favoured Subs' LP you'd care to mention. There will be a promotional video to accompany the release of the record and we're very much looking forward to adding a few of these new songs into our set in the future. Have a great Friday evening, A X “

Adam Ant, Afrika Bambaataa, Beki Bondage, Captain Sensible. Jerry Dammers, Jimmy Pursey, Mark E. Smith, Mickey Fitz, Pauline Black, Poly Styrene, Tony Hadley, TV Smith and Wurzel (Motorhead)

Time & Matter recently spoke to Mat about this amazing new DVD set which runs to an amazing 27 hours and 50 minutes, and he told us more concerning the Subs related content of the films:

"Charlie appears on 3 songs and 4 of the films. 'No Fun Here' where Charlie sings backing vocals on the chorus with Frankie Stubbs from Leatherface (Episode 2),
'Hours and Expenses' where Charlie chats in the kitchen with B Bang Cider from Germany (Episode 7), 'Gone So Long' where Charlie plays harmonica on a track sung by me and also where Ghosts in the studio interfere with the cameras (Episode 9)!
On 'Getting Better' Charlie sings lead vocals and wants to do his mime with a bass guitar, has difficulty remembering the words (Episode 10) and we also see Alvin Gibbs appearing on a track sung by Jennie Bellestar, 'Private Agenda', (Episode 13). Playing bass and double bass in the video, Alvin also chats to producer Dave Goodman in the kitchen about Hanoi Rocks before recording his part.
Pete Davies appears on 'Heroin', a track sung by Pauline Black (Episode 9), and he also plays drums and bumps into Anti-Pasti in the studio. Eleswhere, other ex-Subs Tezz Roberts and Karl Morris play on 'Only Yourself to Blame' sung by Bev Crime from Radio Dead Ones (Episode 26)..."

28/01: FINAL 'ENCORE' SUBS STUDIO ALBUM BEING RECORDED

*** MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT!! ***

ALVIN HAS MADE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT ON SOCIAL MEDIA:

"It seems this month’s edition of Vive Le Rock magazine has revealed that the UK Subs have recorded a new album; and in light of that, we now realise it has become important to explain exactly what’s going on so that rumour mill doesn’t take over and any further speculation starts to be considered fact. Firstly, it’s untrue that we’ve already recorded a new LP. What is factual though is that we are in the process of doing so. Here’s the background to that decision: it has been four years since the release of our purported final album Ziezo, and during that period we’ve been writing new material both collectively whilst on the road and individually at home. Some of those songs appeared on our two subsequent releases – the Predator and The Beast twinned singles of 2017 and the Screaming Senile EP of 2018 – but many remained unrecorded, plus a number of very good songs have come to fruition since. We thought this material deserved an outlet and after chatting to Los Angeles based Cleopatra Records, they offered us that opportunity via one last ‘encore’ album which we’ve entitled Reverse Engineering and are presently working on utilising a mixture of remote recording sessions and old-school studio time. The present lockdown situation has obviously slowed down the process; but as it stands we have already recorded seven backing tracks and are on course – eventual lifting of restrictions allowing – to complete the record by early spring.  We could of released this material via a number of EPs and singles over a period of time, but it costs almost as much to make and manufacture a vinyl 12 inch EP or a 7 inch single as an LP, and those costs would have to be reflected in the pricing of each release; therefore, by having all these song on just one album, we can save the Subs’ record collector a substantially greater amount of money than if we’d released them in batches in different formats at differing times. This will categorically be the last ever UK Subs album – in fact that’s an important part of our deal with Cleopatra – and although there may still be a few that feel a bit uneasy that we’ve reneged on Ziezo being the final LP, I’m sure there are many, many more who would welcome another album from the UK Subs to enjoy during these difficult pandemic times.
Alvin Gibbs, on behalf of the UK Subs."
