Gig Review

by Stijn de Jong (Haarlem, Netherlands)

In the wake of the Endangered Species album, the Subs returned to the
Amsterdam Paradiso with a new line-up for what proved to be a slightly
schizophrenic gig. Drummer Steve Roberts had left and had been
replaced with Kim Wylie, but the more metal influenced sound of the
latest albums was still there in all its glory. There had been a lot
of discussion amongst the Dutch punk scene about this. Some people
weren't going for it and stuck to the first two albums while others -
such as myself - went along with the changes and saw Endangered
Species for the masterpiece that it really was. And both sides were
present during the Amsterdam gig.

The show wasn't quite as explosive as the previous times I'd seen the
band and it seemed to me that everyone was holding back a bit so the
car wouldn't slide off the track. Which is only logical when you're
working with a brand new band member. However, this also meant that
the mid-tempo songs from the new album, like Sensitive Boys, were
delivered with all the subtlety I'd come to love from the studio
versions.

Not everyone agreed with me, however, and there was a lot of traffic
to and from the bar during the gig. During the older songs there was
plenty of mayhem but somehow it all died down a bit when the band
launched into newer material. Which was a pity, I thought, as I really
liked the new stuff. But that's the fashionable Amsterdam crowd for
you. The Subs weren't the first or the last to be confronted with that
kind of attitude. And they stuck to their guns, making it another
great gig.
